There are magi who derive their power from external sources. Everyone knows about grimoire users, usually of little innate magical capacity, or perhaps of those clerics of the Church's secret orders who are said to have acquired gift due to the blessings of God rather than the blessings of blood.

But what if there were other things, other forces that could give Man power over the world? Coming neither from the Root, nor from the creatures of the Root, but from outside its cycles and machinations?

What occult entities inhabit the realms beyond the unmoved mover of the universe and humanity, and what are the powers that they deliver to Men?

This man's story is the tale of one of those accursed mages with powers that exceed the entirety of mankind's collective memory.

Quiet, cold, and occasionally a little sweaty for no good reason, Søren E. Rasmussen and his opaque gaze resembled more so that of a freshly caught fish than of a man. Indeed, much like a recently hooked hake, Rasmussen also bled in his fight to stay alive. He bled because he believed - he believed in what he read, over so many nights along the years, in the writings of so many authors and archaeologists, magi and laymen. Because he believed in the OTHER, and those who dwelt within it.

And from them, he would receive power beyond his wildest dreams.

It is not known why, not even when, but one night, drenched in his own fluids, losing consciousness among a collection of candles and wooden effigies, Rasmussen finally came across THE UNKNOWN. In that moment, in that fraction, what was left of the human in him had surely rotted away.
